Designing A Dietary Management App Aimed at Preventing Cognitive Decline

Abstract

This study presents the design protocol for a culturally tailored mobile dietary management application aimed at preventing cognitive decline among Japanese older adults. Drawing on a literature review, key design requirements were extracted and organized into functional, non-functional, and persuasive elements. The app incorporates a Japanese-specific dietary score, senior-friendly UI/UX features, and cognitive stimulation through gamified elements such as crosswords and progress-based rewards. User-centered design guided development, supported by representative personas and participatory methods. Security and privacy are ensured through TLS encryption and anonymized data handling. The app is being developed using Flutter in an agile framework, with usability to be evaluated via the System Usability Scale and user interviews. This protocol offers a foundation for future implementation and testing of digital health tools to support sustainable dietary behavior change and dementia prevention in aging societies.
